New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
